Why are there so many oil reserves in the middle east?

Pat G is right. This has to do with their geological history. Why are there so many oil reserves in the middle east?
This is more a science question than a current events one. That said, most of it is luck - the areas that are now the middle east once had the right conditions to trap and compress/heat decaying organic matter, producing crude oil deposits that in modern times are quite valuable.

The Middle East is not the only place rich in oil - many other areas have the fortune to have significant amounts of crude oil deposits, from South America to islands in the Pacific.
