Why are Republicans against releasing oil from the strategic reserve, but in favor of releasing oil from ANWR?

Do they only want to release oil when it kills wildlife and ruins the environment? Why are Republicans against releasing oil from the strategic reserve, but in favor of releasing oil from ANWR?
In order to achieve their goal (drilling in ANWR and other protected places) they must keep oil prices artificially inflated in hopes that the American people will be convinced it is the only way to have affordable fuel. Of course the American people will see no relief from the drilling, as it will go on the global market and only the oil companies will profit from it.Why are Republicans against releasing oil from the strategic reserve, but in favor of releasing oil from ANWR?
Because the strategic reserve will not make a dent at all in the supply or the price considering the amount consumed on a daily, weekly, monthly basis in this country. Quit reading news propaganda about drilling in the ANWR and learn some history first. Over 30 years ago Henry Kissinger (secretary of state under Nixon) made a visit to Saudi Arabia, and basically told them that if they purchase our fighter jets we will make then fabulously wealthy by purchasing their oil and banning drilling in the ANWR and off shore. Other nations in the the world do so safely without impact to the environment, so why can't we? Not that it would change the price of gasoline any, as we do not have the refining capacity to process it, not would big oil care to invest in it as they are enjoying the record profits. And remember, it was republicans that banned off shore drilling and drilling in the ANWR in the first place, democrats were opposed to it then.
If every last gallon were released from the Strategic Reserve, it would equal 33 days worth of oil. Obviously, this is a drop in the global bucket, and will do next to nothing to lower the price.

Drilling in ANWR would increase supply dramatically, and would thus lower prices in the long term. Further, you tree-huggers made the same kinds of claims about the Alaska pipeline. Surprise! The pipeline has actually INCREASED wildlife, which is drawn to its warmth during the cold Alaska winters.
Strategic Reserve - Designed to be used in a time of war or other critical moments like the oil embargo of the 1970's. Demand is out stripping supply, releasing 3 days of oil will not have a huge impact on the price of gasoline

ANWR and Off Shore Drilling - Designed to increase the supply of oil onto the world markets, permanently easing supply issues.

Do you want a temp fix or a permanent one?
No mention of the spill on the Mississippi River today in any of the answers. I can only speak for myself but I'm sure getting tired of listening to the republicans on here whine about everything, from the surge working/has worked, to their stance on climate change and everything in between. They grow the government, then complain about its size. They spend like no other administration in our history and then complain about taxes. This oil administration with their secret energy meetings are responsible for many of the woes we are enduring. Their pro-business stance and negligence in oversight and regulatory matters is stunning. They not only allowed the business community to go wild, they encouraged it by invading Iraq destabilizing the global oil industry. This oil shortage is like the one in the early seventies, man made. I look back over the years and I can't think of one doom scenario that republicans have scared Americans to death about come true, not one, yet here we are again in a foreign land fighting an enemy we can't even identify, just like Vietnam. One last thing, does anyone really believe we would be in the middle-east if all that oil wasn't sitting under that sand?
Do you have a long term savings account?

If you do, do you dip into it for a night out on the town? Or to go on vacation? Or do you work overtime at your job for extra cash?

If you spend your emergency money now, what will you do when you are in a real bind?

Same thing with the strategic reserve, its there for national emergency's, like big wars, and major nat. disasters, that but the country in a real shortage of fuel. Similar to WWII when fuel had to be rationed in order not to run out.
the reserve was created as an emergency backup. it holds about 800 million barrels. anwr has 20-90 billion barrels. the usa uses about 18-20 million barrels a day. if we emptied the reserves, it would carry the USA about 30 days. and funny how no wildlife or enviorment was ruined from cat 5 hurricane katrina.
Really? You really have to ask this question?

Why do you have a job with continuing revenue instead of just paying everything out of your emergency savings account?

You really don't know the difference between an emergency reserve and a new supply source?

If I called you retarded I would get reported, so I'll just say that your brain functions at a very reduced level than your average chimp.
The Strategic Oil Reserves exists for extreme emergencies (severe shortages), not to ease the inconvenience of paying higher prices.

Of course releasing the oil would do nothing for gas prices anyway, since the amount they would be able to release would be small.
Uh, there's a wee bit of difference between a strategic reserve and an untapped resource. Perhaps you're possessed of the requisite intellect to comprehend this. Your premise that drilling necessarily kills wildlife and ruins the environment is typically skewed and utterly unfounded.
It's because they're crooked son of a guns who didn't get enough spankins and punishments when they were little. This may sound a little crazy. But I think America would be better off if our current president gets assassinated, along with the whole government. We need change. By the way, let me just say that I admire your boldness. You'll come out and say whatever's on your mind seems like, and that's very impressive. This is your second question I've answered that has to do with Bush and our Government. By the way, I agree with what you had to say about the French and our stupid anti-French Boycott. We should've listened to them. And we still haven't apologized. Do you mind me asking--- who do you want to win the election? I'm for Obama so far.
You remind me of Nancy's talks.

1. We don't kill wildlife.

2. the SPR is for when there IS NO OIL ... There is plenty of oil .... 83 Million barrels per day are being pumped. China buys it and pays the same price we do. It's sad if America is poorer than China. I don't think it is.

3. No other country bans drilling in offshore areas or in the Arctic.

4. Why should Dems buy oil from other countries that ';risk wildlife?'; Britain and Norway drill in the North Sea. But, they don't pollute.

Quit crying wolf and look at reality of where that oil you use comes from. Quit making our enemies so rich.

Uncle Sam gets a lot of tax revenue from US oil companies.
The reserve is for emergencies and it would have very little impact on the price... the ';footprint'; for drilling in ANWAR is comparable to a postage stamp on a tennis court. You should try and educate yourself on these matters and not just parrot the Democrat talking points.
because, genius...the ';Strategic rreserve'; is just that: for strategic, short term purposes...it will last us all of about 3 months.

ANWR, which btw, would have NO deliterious impact on the environment and wildlife, would provide oil for decades...

duh...
Because the strategic reserve is to be used if immediate access to oil is needed in case of interruption, like the Straits Of Hormuz getting closed.

ANWR oil is not being ';released'; - it's being drilled.
The strategic reserve is there to keep things moving in case of a supply shortage. like a war, sanction, or natural disaster..

ANWAR would be a additional source of oil for us to hoard, sell, or consume..

See the difference.
The strategic reserve is for a crisis or emergency. There is nothing going on that warrants it. It is to keep the country running in an emergency shortage.
Well, not to mention, they are not any oil companies that even want to explore, much less extract oil from ANWR - it is the most costly place in the world (literally) to conduct oil recovery.
If you kept on reading the story...the Democrats required a 2/3 vote in favor before they would pass it. Dumb requirement if you ask me - majority did rule, just not to the Democrats satisfaction.
the strategic reserves is only a two month supply and is for emergencies only...not just to bring gas down a few cents for a couple of weeks..ANWR might have a 30 year supply!
The Strategic National Reserve is there for emergencies such as a hurricane or an oil embargo. It is not there to lower consumer prices.
The amount request to release from the reserves will Not make any difference in prices, but that drilled for in the ANWR will, so why won;t the dems let us!
We don't know if Republicans are against releasing oil from the reserve because the democratic leadership changed the rules and that was never voted on..
The Strategic Reserve is for EMERGENCIES only. This is a bipartisan policy.
It's a republican thing, the rest of us are really not expected to understand it.
No, they just want to release it in a way that will make them lots of money. I wonder if they ever finished constructing that pipeline through the Middle East...
Just stubborn.
right, wildlife wont get me to work
If it doesn't make them money.......then the Republicans are against it.
