With the North Sea reserves of oil due to run out, would it be a good idea to........?

.... reopen the mines and collieries of the North of England?

The reserves are due to run out apparently in 2020, at which point we will be solely dependent on oil imports from overseas.

Surely if the Government decide to reopen the mines (the closing of which were a ridiculous idea in the first place) we wouldn't have to worry about importing. This would mean less issues with countries who export oil to us, with arguments over prices. Energy prices wouldn't be as high. Unemployment would reduce, giving the young in the North a good opportunity for the future. Also we could export coal and obtain some much needed funds. I don't know if I am being short sighted or simple minded about this but to me it makes sense. I don't understand why it should be so hard. With the North Sea reserves of oil due to run out, would it be a good idea to........?
Oil and coal are different things. The goverment have plans for coal fired power stations, but you need oil for transportation and loads of other stuff.

The theory is good but coal is ';dirty'; as regards global warming. For some reason the fact that we can make coal ';clean'; is not promoted by the Government as it appears a good idea to use coal for part of our power generation.

Being highly cynical of the Government is this so they can tax us all more? There has to be some nasty political taxation reason as this is the only thing they are interested in!
No, nuclear is the way forward
the north sea is not going to run out of oil ,we have plenty. enough for scotland to be self sufficient.
I think the Government have that in mind, its the last resort

or in a emergency.
I think it would be a better idea to find an efficient way of using tidal energy. The tides come in twice a day, aren't going to run out, and never go on strike. And with all those ice sheets melting, the waves could be bigger. For an island nation like Britain, it's an opportunity that shouldn't be overlooked.
