Is it a good idea to open the oil reserves?
Thanks Charly, people just don't get it!! Report Abuse
Where exactly are these oil reserves? I've always wondered that. Supposedly they have a years worth in reserve. That's a lot of oil. Seems like we'd be tripping over the storage tanks.
No. But it is a good idea to drill in Alaska.
The problem is not oil ! It is that we have not built any gasoline refineries in 29 years!! They can not produce enough gas.The oil-refining industry might have helped create a gasoline market that's so tight that some industry experts and critics say any hurricane, pipeline break or other disruption is likely to cause price spikes. During unprofitable times in the 1990s, some refiners' internal memos show they wanted to reduce refining capacity to boost profits. There is no shortage of oil at all !! In 1982, 30 companies owned California's 42 refineries that could refine 2.58 million barrels of gasoline per day. Today, only 2.02 million barrels of gasoline are refined at California's 14 remaining refineries, according to the California Energy Commission. Of those 14 refineries, nine are owned by just six companies. Those six companies -- ExxonMobil, Shell, BP/Amoco, Chevron, Tesoro and Valero -- control 91 percent of the state's refinery output.Large oil companies have for a decade artificially shorted the gasoline market to drive up prices. Oil companies know they can make more money by making less gasoline. Katrina should be a wakeup call to America that the refiners profit widely when they keep the system running on empty. It's time for government to regulate the industry's supply. The fact that President Bush received $2.6 million from the oil industry for his reelection in 2004 should make regulation of the nation's gas supply one of the Democrats' most important talking points.
