Just came across something interesting . . . I'm paraphrasing for brevity . . . ';During the depths of the Great Depression the U.S. Geological Survey placed strategic oil reserves at 15 years . . . In 1940 the same survey placed strategic oil reserves at 14 years . . . Any thoughts as to the timing and severe under representation or oil reserves . . . ? It is a huge cover up that the Government decided would be in are best interest.Use up the oil supply from other nations before we use are's.We have more oil that Saudi Arabia ever thought of having.We didn't want to use up are natural resources before we took out everyone else's.Something supsiciously interesting about U.S. oil reserves . . .?
The simplest answer is technology and access has changed.





As we develop new technologies, we are more able to locate oil, more accurately measure the volumes, get to the reserves, and refine the various grades. Gone are the days of Wildcat drilling and hoping you strike oil and have the ability to pump and refine only 10 to 25 percent. Now we can drill oil off-shore in 20 miles under water and at a slant. We can extract oil from Tar Sands and refine it as sweet crude.





In addition to technology, price is also an issue. The higher the price of oil, the more cost effective it is to go for the more difficult reserves. Tar Sands are viable not only because of $80 a barrel oil. Deep Water oil and ANWAR are viable because of price and the instability of the Middle East.





There is also the possibility that the government underestimates its reserves so that we don't get complacent. The commercials which say we are down to half the oil on Earth left and will run out in 10 years is not a reality. It is impossible to tell how much oil there is on Earth and how technology will change to get to that oil. But it is safer to say we are almost out of oil and develop new energy sources, finding more later, then it is to say we have plenty, then run out because we can't get to it because of politics, war or lack of attempt to develop the technology.
According to what I was told in class, we have oil reserves for 100 years---and it would not surprise me if we are stockpiling more at this time....
Only naive people now believe anything these corporate monsters say. We are awash in oil, while they destroy their own refineries so they can have excuses for shortages.
The easy to get oil is running out. There are several other places to get oil but they become harder and harder which will still increase the prices. Look up oil shale in Canada.
nowadays they call it ';peak oil'; -another hoax. The fact is the world is swimming both in available know-how for alternative and renewable energy sources PLUS capped oil reserves and a massive grab fro the remainder - the latest being Darfur in Sudan which is believed have considerable reserves (hence the mysterious ethnic cleansing which appeared of out of the blue).


They do their best to sit on both the reserves and suppress the alternatives.


perhaps the question realty is: why do we allow it?
