21.4 billion barrels proved compared with 1.2 trillion worldwide so 1.7%What percent of the earth's oil reserves are in the united states?
The definition of reserves is quite tricky and has technical and financial/legal implications. For currently economic proven oil reserves, the US has a very small proportion - less than 2%. The oil actually in the ground will be an even smaller proportion since the US territory and offshore has been intensively drilled for oil.
However under changed economics (higher oil prices), oil shale in Colorado and Wyoming could become economic. The resource is more than 2 trillion barrels and dwarfs other resources. There is enough oil in these rocks to keep the US going for a thousand years at current utilization rates. Of course extraction has significant economic and environmental issues. Really small. I think it's between 1 and 2%. Most of the world's oil comes from the countries that are a part of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) mainly being in the Middle East with a few in Africa and one in South America.
